I recently got my iPod stolen at school.. Would I be able to use the serial number to locate it even though the iPod has a different IOS than my phone?

i was at school and i lost my ipod or someone stole it how do i find it
ipod keep going to recovery mode, i have restoed it many times.It keep going to recovery or stick on the apple.
its restoe great and after i turn it off and llater turn it back on it get stuck on thew apple logo.
