Im trying to reset my son's iPod touch....to only thing that appears on the screen is the usb plug with the itunes logo on top??? Nothing will happen?? Help

Trying to help my son with his ipod touch ...............it wont do anything....only thing on the screen is a usb plug with the itunes logo on top! I plug it into the computer and nothing happens:-(....HELP
