feedback on the methods to deal with disabled iPod Touch

The advice on connecting disabled iPod to iTunes seems useful. Except that the iTunes start downloading the update and always stops with error (-50). Found recommendations about deleting \Downloads in the iTunes folder, but there is no such folder on my Mac.
The idea to use the iCloud to wipe out the disabled iPod on the other hand seems useless. As it required the device to connect to the Internet, which being disabled cannot happen.
