if i plug my ipod 4th generation into my computer with my usb cord why wont my itunes reconize it?

i have tried pluging my ipod into my windows computer with many different usb cords and it wont recognize on itunes but it shows it has connected to my windows computer. why am i haveing this very irritating problem? someone please help
