Do you have the latest iTunes installed? The latest is 11. iOS 56 requires 10.7 or later.
DId it work/connect before with iOS 6?
Does it charge?
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Run this to see if it give any useful information

Uninstalling/reinstalling the same version of iTunes will not help since iTunes sees the phone.
